Day 2 – The Funny Man In The Funny Hat
This poem is inspired by the beautiful scene in the movie of Patch Adams, played by Robin Williams who clowns for a child in their hospital bed. There’s a whole army of people who do this sort of thing, making such a difference in the lives of children and their families troubled by their journey with cancer and other disease:
How we cried with joy at the funny man in the funny hat
as he made the hospital beds giggle with delight.
His audience captive, little hearts and faces brimming with joy,
and for one brief moment, full of life and power.
When many since that time are no more,
even one so close to our hearts, we can choose to remember
not the stillness of death but the shaking, giggling beds, so infectious that littles faces were not big enough
for their smiles.
In that, a brief moment when the whole world is theirs to own.
So we ask, where is the funny man in the funny hat now?
Ah, he’s in a virtual company of many many others and only one
bringing a brief respite from pain that is healing to precious children
young and old, and joyful tears to those watching
unable to do more but love and care.
A little child shall lead them?
Especially when a funny man in a funny hat is our hero.
